SugarlandAs a recent personal project I've created these festive characters each with a different wintery & christmas themed hat. These candy coated illustrations inspired by vintage christmas decorations from the 60s & 70s & Phil Spector type Christmas songs will certainly be bringing good tidings to you and your kin!I've made the designs into a set of limited edition art print/cards ideal to give to that special someone under the mistletoe or as an unusual stocking filler. Bedtime StoriesGerman family & lifestyle magazine Nido recently commissioned me to do these 2 illustrations for their December edition. The images accompany a short story by Florian Simbeck.The story which roughly translates as 'The Boy Who Wasn't there' is about a little kid who can't sleep and his dad - too busy with work to read him any more stories - tells him if he just lays there long enough he will eventually 'be gone' 9 as in gone to sleep )Being a little boy with a huge imagination he worries that he will actually disappear so has to investigate the other people & animals in his house sleepin. In the end both the boy & dad both fall fast asleep & the only place they have 'gone' is to dreamland. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

Stocking Filler

Pop-Up!

A recent fun commission I had was to create a pop-up Christmas card for attorney firm Venner Shipley. Apart from sending season's greetings the card also had to notify clients of the company moving 'home' & what better way to illustrate these subjects than an ice skating house of course!The ice skating house pop's up from behind the trees & snowman when the card opens!

Dance Card

This logo I recently designed was for dance school 'Dance Design' in Nottingham. The school specialises in ballet,tap, jazz & street dance for kids so the logo had to be fun, friendly & energetic!I also designed these jazzy business cards with different fondant inspired coloured backs... now show me your jazz hands!

Dam it!

Here's a recent image I created for topical environmental website - myoo.com. The piece was to accompany an article comparing figures on the controversial Belo Monte dam in Brazil to the Three Gorges dam in China & the environmental impacts things like dams have on their surroundings including displacing local residents & flooding rainforests.

A recent illustration I worked on for the biannual magazine of patent and trade mark attorneys Venner Shipley. This bunch of business men and women shuffling to work under the protection of a rather large bowler hat represents amongst other things the importance of intellectual property rights to businesses, changes in european & american patent law, the many new trainees joining the team & the company going places!

The Spy Book

Reference book publisher - Dorling Kindersley released a new book last week - 'The Spy Book' - covering EVERYTHING you could ever want or need to know about spies, secret agents and all things top secret!

Included in this Spy bible is an illustration by yours truly. The double page spread I created entitled 'Meet the Team' shows all the people within a spy team and how they are all connected to each other influence by Heath Robinson type contraptions.

The image has so much detail it's hard to see as a whole in the small image but hopefully the detail shots will help & of course if you want to study the image in full and perhaps learn how to become a spy in the process you can buy the book here!

National Geographic TravellerI was recently commissioned to illustrate a column in the November/December issue of National Geographic Traveller magazine (UK edition). The image accompanies a passage about 'staycations' (staying in the UK for holidays ) Persuading people that a holiday at home shouldn't necessarily be destined for failure as long as you explore the many beautiful & interesting places that are on offer in the British Isles and to steer clear of motorway service stations, anyplace with sky sports on TV, homogenous high streets and if it rains take shelter under a tree & not in the doorway of a Halfords!

Specsavers

Some images I created for a Treasure Island themed webpage for opticians - Specsavers.

As part of and incentive to get staff to sell more contact lenses the company launched this promotion whereby employees could log in to the website with a chance to win prizes by clicking on different parts of a treasure map.

I worked on these interactive webpages which were later animated and appeared on the companies intranet. The theme was treasure island with various nods to pirates & treasure hunts.The winning treasure chest being full of treasure and the unsuccesful one bones and moths. Bonbek Magazine

French kids publication - Bonbek - recently commissioned me to illustrate a story in volume 3 of their magazine. The bilingual magazine's strap line " the magazine for kids that makes parents jealous" is true to it's word as the mag is full of great illustrated stories and games for kids that any design conscious adult will also love. My story covers an epic 10 double page spreads and follows the adventures of a little girl 'Soupolé' who wants to find out why she is named after 'milk soup'! I'm really pleased with the way this project turned out and hope to pursue some more kids story ideas in future... watch this space! You can see some of the spreads belowalong with detailed shots. Ellesse HeritageJust in time for the Wimbledon finals! - Iconic Italian sportswear brand Ellesse commissioned me to come up with these retro designs for limited edition tshirts based on tennis stars featured in their old ad campaigns from the 80s. The tshirts are part of their new heritage line also including the work of 2 other illustrators and will be available to buy on their website soon. They're also currently stocked in Ellesse's very own East London pop up store. The pop up store & coffee shop which is currently open at 77 Redchurch Street, Shoreditch until the 3rd August stocks old and new collections, along with other items of interest & of course my Tshirts!I was also pleased to have a mention in Marie Claire España who seemed to like my designs... Ole!

Times Tables

I currently have this new piece - 'Topsy Turvy' on show in a bar near Milan. The exhibition is a bit unusual in that a lot of the artworks are not in frames on walls but instead displayed on table tops!

The exhibition is curated by a fantastic new Italian illustration magazine nur@nt ( Issue 1 in which I recently featured ) and runs until the 25th August at Officine Libra, Via Buonarroti 72, Monza, if you happen to be in the area!

I was recently asked by attorney firm, Venner Shipley to illustrate the cover of their magazine. The company who specialise in patents & trade marks wanted me to come up with an image that would encapsulate 'miscellaneous European patent law developments' - a bit of a challenge I must admit, but think I managed to nail it in the end!

Can Can!I had a lovely private commission at the end of last year loosely based on a story that the client had read in a newspaper. The story was something along the lines of an elderly couple that had bought a tin of Heinz chicken soup when they had met and on their 50th wedding anniversary they eat it to symbolise their everlasting love. The illustration had to encapsulate 'happily ever after' and of course the chicken soup... sweet idea! Here's what I came up with.

Can You Draw The Internet?

I was recently invited through Agency Rush to take part in a contest run by creative advertising agency Siant. The objective was to interpret the internet visually. The question was put to industry creatives as well as 10 year old kids ( who have never lived without the internet ) to see who could come up with the most imaginative image. The response overall was very interesting with many strong images & some of the kids ideas are pretty amazing too actually! The Big IssueI was recently commissioned to do some work for the Big Issue magazine. Quite an interesting brief to illustrate round a photo for a change but luckily it worked out ok! The cover features my illustrations surrounding songstress Kate Nash in a kind of crazy dreamesque jungle.

I also worked on some illustrated typography for the feature article inside, also on Kate Nash titled "The Road to Nashville". This edition of the big issue is out now on a street near you!

Cycling in London

As part of a campaign to promote cycling, the London Transport Museum recently launched a contest for illustrators to depict cycling in the capital. The competition was fierce with many top illustrators taking part. only 50 of some 1000 entrants were picked for the exhibition. Unfortunately I wasn't one of the lucky 50 but I thought I would still share my design with you!

Live Art

Last week I was invited to do a live painting at the Glug + D&AD student awards after party at the Vibe bar London. I must say a tall order - especially as the board was over 8' & I had about 5 hours to paint! Despite not painting since my art school days years ago I managed to complete the task in had - with the aid of my helpers & a few beers - & the end result wasn't too displeasing! Check out the East End Arts Club's current pop up exhibition which kicks off with a private view tonight. Offside is an artistic perspective on the World Cup. In keeping with all things world cup & football I've designed a print for the exhibition based on those little panini stickers everyone used to collect & swap when they were kids. Mimobots

A while ago I entered a competition on design community site infectious.com to design a new Mimobot (essentially a mix between a USB flash drive and a collectable designer figure). Unfortunately I didn't win the comp - well there was a lot of very strong competition - but I thought I'd share my designs with you anyway!The 3D mockups were lovingly rendered by graphic designer Daniel Vanches who also created a poster of all the best entrys & how they would have looked if produced... it kind of reminds me of the back of an 80s Starwars figure pack! :-)

On the Cover of a Magazine...I recently worked on some illustrations for South African magazine - Migrate. Migrate magazine is the official magazine of the Loerie awards, the advertising,communication & design awards for Africa & the Middle East . I designed the front and inside covers as well as having a few existing works featured inside.

The brief was 'a sign of the times' so as you can imagine there was a lot of subjects required to be covered meaning a lot of imagery to fit in - a tall order to say the least... anyway being one to rise to a challenge I dived in head first & the end results seem to have paid off.

The Ark

I was invited to take part in the Ark project earlier in the year.

ARK the book, is out now - curated by Argentine design company DGPH & published by IdN. The idea was to invite a selection of illustrators and designers from across the planet to each illustrate an animal from their native country to be 'saved' in the ark & create an illustrated animal 'bible'.

The book is packed full of animals from each continent of the planet visualised in a plethora of styles. For The Ark I chose the Puffin representing Scotland. (The stag was already taken!)

Noise of Art I have 2 pieces in the East End Arts Club group show 'Noise of Art'. It should be a pretty interesting show as all artists had to use 12" vinyl records as their canvas.

Happy New (Tax) Year!

If only doing tax returns was slightly more enjoyable... Here's something to cheer you up. The new 'if you could' book is finally finished. This year in the form of a diary running April - April. Each Illustrator was asked "if you could do anything tomorrow, what would it be?" and each week of the diary is a different designer's reply to that question. My contribution adorns week 44 'stop the rain'.

I got a design selected a little while ago for the new 'if you could' book - which this time is in the form of a diary. For those unfamiliar with the format everyone is ask the question 'if you could do anything tomorrow what would it be?' and asked to respond with a visual answer. The diary should be out very soon... The Ark

I've recently been invited to contribute to the Ark project - an interesting book idea being curated by Argentine graphic design duo DGPH. The idea is that each designer picks an animal from their native country to be 'saved' in the Ark. The book's due to be published by IdN & should be out around April 2009. Check the website for full rundown of contributors and their chosen species. I've picked the puffin but you'll have to wait till the book comes out to see it... here's a sneaky peak:

Charidy

I've got some work in a holiday benifit exhibition/auction at Gallery Nucleus, Alhambra ( LA ).The event runs for 2 days 13th & 14th December and the money raised goes to the red cross. Peace & Good will!

Bobbin World

The guys over at Bobbin Bicycles have branched out & we've worked together to create a range of merchandise featuring their characters. As well as being able to buy from a fabulous array of amazing Dutch bicycles & riding accessories you can now get your hands on mugs, badges, calendars, christmas cards and snowfalls all featuring the bobbin world.

They're hoping to develop some more bike related merchandise featuring my designs in the new year too... watch this space! - All the goodies mentioned above are available in their London 'boutique' at 19 Arlington Way, Angel, EC1R 1UY.

YCN Book

The New YCN book 08/09 is out now with lots of veritable eye candy no doubt & featuring some of my tree ladies! You may remember I posted pics of them a couple of weeks back...well now they've joined many other peoples tree creations in a huge paper forest which features in the book. The book was designed by talented design studio Hudson Bec and is available to buy from the YCN site. If you look very close with your eagle eyes you can just about see my trees... the ones with girls' faces & birds on top!...Where's wally?

Blanket Magazine

I have an illustration featured in issue 12 of Australian online art and design magazine - Blanket. The theme for this issue was travel and you can see my illustration below.

Visit their website to download a pdf of the full magazine. There will also be a set of badges available to buy soon with illustrations from this issue. My design will be included in the pack.

Bobbin Bicycles Shop

Those lovely people over at Bobbin Bicycles have just opened their first shop in London near Angel tube. As well as selling their retro-style Dutch bikes and an array of cool accessories some of my illustrations are adorning their walls large scale! Watch out for the addition of a new character to help promote their new bike - the Electra.

The shop can be found at 19 Arlington Way, London, EC1 1UR and is open Tusday - Friday 11-7 and Saturday 11-6.

World of YCN

The guys down at YCN asked me to create some trees to sit in a forest that will become part of the world of YCN and feature in their forthcoming book 0809.

It's Pop It's Art

Very happy that I recently won the IPIA design competition! - As part of the 'Hidden Depths' season run by San Miguel, Airside's 'it's Pop It's art' curated a night of music and design at the Amersham Arms in New Cross. As part of the event they ran a competition to design a visual cover version of the song 'WAR' by Edwin Starr.

I was shortlisted to the final six so my design ( above ) was exhibited along with the other finalists and the IPIA back catalogue.To read more about the night visit the Airside shop blog here. To top off a great night I won the competition so along with a nice prize my design will become part of the official It's Pop It's Art range available on the Airside website. Limited edition prints should be for sale soon from the airside shop.

Images 32 Book

I've had 3 illustrations selected for Images 32-The best of British contempory illustration 2008 published by the AOI - out now - Along with the book is a month long exhibition at London College of Communication in Elephant & Castle. The show runs till 27th August.

I have limited edition Giclee prints available of the 'Love For Sale' design. The prints are museum quality and 50x70cm. Contact me for more information about these if you are interested.

Refacimento Exhibition

I was asked to submit a poster design to be part of an exhibition shown at the 3rd 'supertrash' film festival at the Bagdad Theatre, Portland. Being a film festival the brief was refacimento posters of 'trash' movies. See my design below...

The exhibition runs from 15th - 17th Aug and is sponsered by Fantagraphics books and a book featuring the posters is due to come out next year in conjuncton with a second exhibition at the Andy Warhol museum.

Cravendale Milk

Future Milk is a competition by Craendale in association with The Young Creative Network (YCN). The brief was to come up with new packaging to appeal to a younger generation.

Amelia's Magazine

Watch out for issue 09 of the fantastic Amelia's Magazine - out now - featuring a double page spread by yours truly. The theme was 'a positive future' looking towards an idealistic greener view of a future with no pollution, minimal carbon emissions etc...

This issue was launched with a party at the Pure Grooves record shop in Clerkenwell. My illustration along with several others were on exhibit for the night and a few days after in the shop (I had pride of place in the window - unfortunately my camera died so I don't have a record of it!).

Orange

I've designed some images through YCN for orange's optimistic images project. Each image to demonstrate a word or phrase related to the company. It's planned the images will become part of an online library that will be utilised by orange and the many agencies with whom they work.

Talking of orange I found this amazing link to part of their website... It's very well designed as well as great fun... had me hooked for ages! Make sure you chat to the character called Buzz - you can actually have a conversation with him - it's crazy! I think it's designed by Poke London. Visit unlimited orange!

Stereohype

I entered some designs into the Stereohype badge design competition last month. Unfortunately I didn't win top prize but I did come runner up... and in a competition that sees over 500 entries from all over the world, that's not bad going!

Association of Illustrators

I've had some work recently selected for the next AOI images book out in August. They have also used one of my illustrations to advertise an event - "Viral Fruits -Is the internet ripe for the picking?" in their newsletter and on their website.
